One-for-One Commitment, which matches planted areas with conservation areas, earns Amcham Eco Award, one of Brazil’s most prestigious corporate sustainability awards
With an innovative approach in Brazil’s pulp sector, Bracell’s One-for-One Commitment, a global leader in soluble pulp production, has been recognized as one of the winners of the 2025 Amcham Eco Award, granted by Amcham Brasil (the American Chamber of Commerce).
Launched in 2022, the One-for-One Commitment establishes a simple yet transformative principle: for every 1 hectare of eucalyptus planted, Bracell commits to supporting the conservation of 1 hectare of native vegetation. In other words, every advance in production is matched by an equal step in conservation—keeping production and environmental protection in balance throughout its operations.
The Eco Award, in existence for over 40 years, is one of Brazil’s most important recognitions in corporate sustainability. This year’s edition received 147 projects submitted by 120 companies. Bracell earned the award in the category “Sustainability Practices in Processes” with its One-for-One Commitment, which stands out as an innovative model of environmental governance and large-scale positive impact.
In 2024 alone, 186,000 hectares of native forests in public conservation areas were positively impacted by the initiative—an area larger than the city of São Paulo—across the states of Bahia, São Paulo, and Mato Grosso do Sul, in regions such as Bauru, Botucatu, Entre Rios, Itanagra, Três Lagoas, and Aquidauana. The target of achieving equivalence between planted and conserved areas will be met by the end of 2025, but Bracell is committed to maintaining the One-for-One Commitment permanently, expanding protected areas in line with the growth of its forestry operations.
“Receiving the Eco Award with the One-for-One Commitment is a recognition not only of the program’s innovative nature but also of its ability to generate real and lasting environmental value. The results of this initiative set a new standard for conservation in the sector, proving that productive growth can, in fact, be a powerful ally of Brazil’s biodiversity,” said Márcio Nappo, Bracell’s Vice President of Sustainability.
Beyond conservation on Bracell’s own lands, the One-for-One Commitment also supports the protection and preservation of key ecosystems in public conservation areas. Through partnerships with the governments of São Paulo, Bahia, and Mato Grosso do Sul, the company promotes actions to prevent and combat forest fires, enhance biodiversity monitoring, and improve infrastructure in state parks. These efforts strengthen and expand the ongoing work of local environmental agencies.
Among the actions carried out in 2024 and 2025 are the creation of aerial wildlife crossings, installation of high-tech forest fire monitoring towers, use of acoustic monitoring to study wildlife species, and control of invasive species using deep learning technology. These initiatives are spread across 20 Conservation Units and state parks, managed in partnership with environmental agencies such as São Paulo’s Fundação Florestal, Mato Grosso do Sul’s Instituto do Meio Ambiente (Imasul), and Bahia’s Secretaria do Meio Ambiente (Sema).
The One-for-One Commitment is one of the key initiatives of Bracell’s 2030 Agenda, the company’s strategic sustainability plan. Its public targets include the conservation of 230,000 hectares of native vegetation in public conservation areas and the removal of 25 million tons of CO₂ from the atmosphere by 2030—reinforcing the company’s role in the transition to a low-carbon economy.
By turning production growth into a powerful driver of ecosystem protection, the One-for-One Commitment strengthens Bracell’s position as one of the leading companies in biodiversity conservation.
